foreigners in Hong Kong to obtain their views." The Japanese
Military pseudo language study officer in Hong Kong still
retains his staff of "personal attendants" and all are doing
much travelling to Canton and Macau.
An espionage agent, formerly stationed in Hong Kong as a
newspaperman, returned for a short while during the quarter
and was seen to study Japanese trade in local shops. Bank
of Japan officials visited the Colony in November to inspect
economic conditions in Hong Kong and Macau, and a man who
calls himself manager of the Young Men's Diplomatic
Association has come to investigate diplomatic affairs.
Local firms are still importing Japanese goods and there
are reports of Indian dealers applying their own names
to goods of Japanese manufacture. The Peace Pledge Union's
local branch held a peace week in November, but received
no serious support.
The MANCHUKUO Goodwill Mission to Europe passed
through the Colony 16.12.38 on its way home and was
entertained by the local Japanese community. Japanese
shipping companies and officials are now referring to
Manchuria natives as MANCHESE.
A Japanese CULTURAL Mission to Germany headed
by MARQUIS INOUYE passed through Hong Kong 29.12.38 on its
way to Berlin to stage art exhibitions there in furtherance
of the German-Japanese CULTURAL FACT.
The Japanese Boy Scouts' Mission to Germany
passed through Hong Kong 5.11.38 on its way home and toured
the Colony led by a local Japanese suspect. The boy scouts
appeared to be aged between 20 - 30 and wore military
uniform.
There were no anti-Japanese incidents during the quarter
and no violent anti-Japanese propaganda, and in these
respects the Colony is now strangely quiet.
